N.D.C ELECTS EXECUTIVES

The Mfantseman West Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (N.D.C) has organized an election to replace executive of the party whose term of office has elapsed.

Nasir Adams, polled 64 out of 124 votes cast to become the constituency youth organizer for the party, Fredrick Samara, polled 56 out of 124 votes to become the Deputy youth organizer.

For the Women Organizer position, Alice Wonkye was elected unopposed together with her Deputy Mrs. Efua Allan.

Alex Beechem polled 184 out of 273 votes cast to become Secretary for the party with his Deputy James Essoun going unopposed.

Former Constituency Chairman for the party, Mr. Stephen Edward Moore was elected again unopposed as Chairman for the party together with the Vice, Mohammed Husseinu also going unopposed.

Felix R. Quansah was elected organizer for the party together with the vice, Robert Kobina Johnson going unopposed.

Oscar k. Appiah polled 160 out of 172 votes cast to become treasure with his Deputy Mary Annan elected unopposed ,Ramos Zoryiku was also elected Propaganda secretary together with the Deputy, Fred Budu Haggan all going unopposed.

The Member of Parliament, (MP) for Mfantseman West, Hon. Aquinas Tawiah Quansah charged the elected executives to be selfless, dedicated and work as a team to help maintain the party in power come 2012.

He again asked those who lost their positions not to shy away from the winners but should collaborate with them to make their tenure successful.

In another development, the MP donated 50 bags of cement to the Nkroful Community in the Mfantseman Municipality for their Library project.

He is also constructing an ante-natal shed at the Saltpond government hospital at the Cost of GH 42,000 cedis

INTERGRATED MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH COMPAIGN - RUBY NYAMEKYE OFOSUA

The Mfantseman Municipal Health directorate has recruited 336- volunteers to provide Health care to some people in all areas in the Municipality under National Integrated Maternal and Child Health campaign.

The purpose of the campaign is to prevent Children under 5- from dying from preventable diseases and to also prevent maternal death in the country.

The Mfantseman Municipal Health Director, Dr. Kwabena Sarpong revealed, the volunteers will administer Polio Vaccines to children from birth to 5, de-worm children from 2-5 years, and also supplementation of Vitamin A to children 6 months -5 years and to breastfeeding Mothers within 8 weeks of delivery.

He added, the volunteers will as well register children under 1-year under the birth registry and provide them with certificates.

He said the team will undergo a counting exercise for Dogs and Cats in the Municipality in collaboration with the Vertinary Service in order to vaccinate them against Rabies.

Dr. Sarpong said, the team will finally identify severely malnourished children in the Municipality to assist in giving them Therapeutic foods to help them recover to prevent them from dying.

PRO-LINK AND IOM HAND OVER TRAFFICKED CHILDREN



Pro-Link an NGO in collaboration with the International organization for Migration (IOM) has organized a handing over ceremony at Immuna in the Mfantseman East Constituency for 52- trafficked children.

The children who were handed over to their parents were trafficked from Immnuna, Senya Braku and other communities in the country to Yeji to engage in fishing activities but were rescued by pro-link and IOM.

The Co-ordinator for Pro-Link, Mr. Bernard Yamson disclosed, his organization provided school uniforms, shoes, enroll the victims in school and also provide them with learning materials to ensure they attend school.

He said research revealed the children are given out to traffickers in exchange of money for the performance of death rites for family relations.

He warned people who engage in child trafficking should desist from the act since it is illegal and added culprits will be dealth with by law when caught.

Mr. Yamson called on stakeholders to assist in finding sponsorship packages for the children’s upbringing to prevent them from becoming wayward.

Mr. Emmanuel Hope from the National Commission for Civic Education tasked parents to work hard to be able to fend for their wards since it’s their sole responsibility to provide for the needs of their children.

The Mfantseman Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Emmanuel Odonkor said the welfare of the nation depends on children who are future leaders and tasked parents to see to their education.

The Mfantseman Municipal Social Welfare Officer, Mr. Osborn Amonoo, attributed the causes of child trafficking to broken homes as a result of divorce, out- moded cultural practices where children are made to buy coffins to bury their dead father, Ignorance and others.

He tasked people to assists government in eradicating child trafficking from the Central Region and the country as a whole.

Mfantseman Municipality records 39 accidents with 17 deaths


The Motor, Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, recorded 39 accidents with 17 deaths in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region, from January to September.


Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Oscar Narh Odonkor, who made this known at Mankessim said 66 six vehicles were involved in the accidents.

He was speaking at the launch of the Road Safety Campaign organised by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in the municipality, aimed at minimising road accidents throughout the last quarter of the year, particularly during Christmas and the New Year festivities.
DSP Odonkor debunked the belief by a section of the public that accidents are caused through spiritual means, explaining that they are the consequence of careless driving.

He appealed to the government and other stakeholders in road traffic, to collaborate to check the situation.

DSP Odonkor suggested the need for the creation of highway points fitted with electronic gadgets, to determine the speed of a moving vehicle and the enforcement of spot fines for drivers caught over speeding.
Mr Thomas Nintori, Regional Manager of DVLA, asked drivers and other road users to be conversant with road signs.

He said the road signs should be displayed at every lorry park to serve as a guide to the public.

Mr Nintori said DVLA had stopped issuing licence to people who could not read and write.

He cautioned that it was an offence for a driver who was under 25 years old to drive commercial vehicle, adding that those above 18 years are limited to operate only private vehicles.

Mr Samuel Oiver Adabo, Municipal Fire Officer cautioned drivers against the practice of keeping petrol in gallons in the bonnet of their vehicles.

Ms Catherine Hamilton, Regional Manager, NRSC said it was mandatory for drivers to keep log books in their vehicles to check over speeding and warned that those who failed to carry it would be arrested and prosecuted.

She announced toll-free lines, which would enable passengers to report the misconduct of drivers to the law enforcing agents.

They are: Kasapa 10800, Vodafone 0800-10800 and MTN 18008.

Ms Vivian Etroo, Municipal Director of Education urged drivers to respect Zebra crossing and cautioned against over loading of vehicles which convey school children.

She appealed to parents to get older people to accompany children under six years of age to and from school.

Mr Vincent Biney Amissah, Municipal Co-ordinator of the Ghana Red Cross Society suggested that drivers must be trained in administering First Aid to accident victims.

He expressed concern about the abuse of First Aids boxes in vehicles and advised drivers to keep them for the intended purposes.

Nana Impraim VII, Acting President of Ekumfi Traditional Area asked drivers not to be over confident on the road and compromise on safety.
